How does it work?

As a 1:1 Learning Coach, I work with students aged 14 to 21 as they move through changes in their learning, often in worldschooling, unschooling, homeschooling or self-directed settings.

In my first conversation with a family, I use a simple picture: parents are handing their teen the keys to drive their own education. The student takes the driver’s seat and makes the learning decisions, and I sit in the passenger seat to support them.

My role is to give students real responsibility for their education, help them explore what matters to them, and support them through challenges with confidence and resilience. I also guide students and families through the college and university decision-making process, from exploring options to choosing the path that fits.

The Learning Powers approach

A simple weekly cycle that helps students understand how they learn, with real time set aside to review and reflect.

A repeating weekly cycle: Purpose, then Plan, then Do, then Review, and back to Purpose 1Purpose2Plan3Do4Review Every week
  1. Purpose

Why are you doing this, and what do you want to achieve?

  2. Plan

How can you go about making it happen?

  3. Do

What do you need to do to achieve your purpose?

  4. Review

How well did it go? Students look back at their workload, wins and capacity, and adjust the plan for next week.

Traditional classrooms rarely leave time to stop and think. Students move from one subject and deadline to the next without asking what worked or how much they can realistically take on. Each week, my students review their own workload and capacity, celebrate wins and decide what to change. Over time, they learn to manage their learning themselves.

Kaitlin: from learning for the test to thriving as an engineering major

Where she started
At 16, Kaitlin was an American teenager living in Portugal who had been through several schools. She was still in a traditional school, fed up with forced subjects and learning for the test. We started coaching while she finished her school year there.
What we did
We worked together for two and a half years, until she graduated from high school. We met at the start and end of every week. She set her top three priorities on Monday, had WhatsApp support during the week and closed each week with a reflection call. We began with a list of 20 things she found interesting, and together mapped out a self-directed route to finishing high school.
Where she is now
Kaitlin graduated from high school and moved to the US in August 2025. She’s now in her second year of university, thriving as an engineering major.

“I don’t need to spend all of my time doing things and learning things just for academic validation, it can still be productive, even if it’s for myself.”
Kaitlin, after her first summer of coaching
I feel also that there is a big improvement after even the first two weeks with you, he is trying to make a change and is willing to do more. Thank you for all that you do.

Before we started our sessions, I felt overwhelmed and insecure about my academic performance and organization skills, both in school and at sports. I struggled to maintain quality work, meet deadlines, and stay organized, unsure if my challenges were normal or something I needed to address. However, since working with you as my learning coach, I've gained valuable insights and tools to structure myself effectively and excel in my studies. I've learned how to manage my workload, organize my classes, and deliver high-quality assignments. For example, when writing a paragraph about the third year of the Roman Empire, I now incorporate references to other historical events and cite articles, enriching my work significantly. Additionally, you have helped me apply these organizational skills beyond academics, such as in video games, where I now tackle optional missions and tasks with ease, improving my gameplay experience and overall productivity. Thanks to our coaching conversations, I've developed healthier habits and gained confidence in my ability to succeed.

I cannot tell you enough what a difference it has been with our daughter's overall general outlook on “things!” She is joyful and positive and for the first time since before the pandemic learning. She now has a plan- a direction! And for that, we thank you! You are a blessing to us!!
